I can't remember what my pain felt like.

He was riding, roping, and doing many of the things he loves. I asked Bert if he had any memory of the pain that had radiated down his leg, when he could not bear weight and had to use crutches to get around his house. He paused, and I could see he was thinking. He said, “Well, I can’t remember; it’s been so long. I can’t remember what it was like.”

Pain and problems are rarely if ever one thing.

Recovery and resiliency are products of a confluence of dozens of small things. This is true for everything from cancer to pain. In fact, it is virtually impossible for our healing or health to come down to only one thing. It is ironic and fascinating that our current culture invests trillions of dollars and unfathomable amounts of time trying to identify “the one thing.” A single drug or procedure or person to solve our health and pain problems. It is widely recognized, inside and outside the healthcare system, that the healthcare system in the United States is not working.
